!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I really really want an expensive to maintain, semi-unreliable, 1980s German sports car to be my winter beater.

Pet peeves about car ads?
-When they say it's the same model that was in a movie.
-When someone says a Camaro/Bird has a "Corvette" engine in it.
Am I wrong for thinking the aftermarket support for the 944's isn't actually all that costly? More than a Honda, but less than a BMW?

tom drove a 928 in risky business not a 944.

Keep looking. This car is way overpriced, and it's an early '85 model, which means it has boxy interior and questionable build quality. It's also a single cam that's pretty slow in any situation. I bought an '87 944S on ebay for $800, and it drove 3 hours to my house (badly). It needed some work, but I fixed it up and sold it for around $2600, and it ran like a dream. If you're going to spend the money, get a later model S or S2, or get a turbo, but be prepared for maintenance costs. If you'd like to know more about owning the car, let me know. I know these things pretty intimately.

I'm in no position to buy another car right now, but one day I will own a 944. My dad had one back in the 80s and loves to tell stories of it. I have a neighbor that has an S2 in his garage and wants me to drive it when the weather gets better.

Simple, if you don't spend any money on maintenance it all of a sudden becomes cheap to maintain and extremely reliable... Sort of

You should get it! I always have so many 944s for sale around me, and I want one so bad.

And then the serpentine belt breaks and the engine magically blows up.

That's when you blame the car for being cheap, and the previous owner for not warning you. See it's all about the blame game, but seriously I too want a 944.

I'm actually writing up the story of my 944S as we speak. It involved driving home in a torrential downpour with no windshield wipers, in an interior covered in rat turds and a car that turned left when i accelerated and turned right when I pressed the brake. It was a ton of fun to drive because it was the first car I've ever driven with the transmission in the back and near 50/50 weight distribution. You'd be surprised the gems you find if you just look. The market has been pretty crappy for these cars, but I suspect that it will pick up when people realize what great cars they are.

I can't wait to read it. Sadly in my area everyone assumes since there is a porsche badge on the front of the car that it must be worth a ton (sellers of ones with a blown motor are asking $2000).

It looks nice, if you have the patience to work on it you should go for it!
